Community Garden looking its best in August

p8040008_440The Community garden is well worth a visit during early August, vegetable crops are looking their best and the incredible results of years of heavy applications of GREAN’s compost can be seen. Plots are available for next season, so anyone interested should register with the office at Unit 2. ‘Ihave never seen my leeks and onions grow so well’ was one comment from a happy gardener who took a plot this year for the first time. Gardeners are reminded that plants grown should be annual only and cleared up during winter to allow application of more GREAN community compost, which generally happens during frosty weather in January and February to avoid soil compaction. The beds are thickly mulched by GREAN staff to give good weed control and will require minimal preparation for next season’s crops. The hedge around the garden is due to receive its annual cut, it was planted in 2002 with help from SNH and a large turnout of volunteers, it includes 21 different plant species intended to give maximum wildlife benefit as well as provide shelter.

Golspie in Bloom open evening

The GREAN community garden was a hive of activity on Wednesday 16th June when Golspie in Bloom held another successful open evening, to show members of the public their stunning display of hanging baskets and bedding plants in the GREAN poly tunnel ready to go out to brighten the village for the summer. Visitors came from far and wide including other ‘in Bloom’ groups and enjoyed a fine evening, with sales table and a free glass of wine.

Much interest was shown in the community garden and plots have alreadyp1010116_440 been booked for next season. Well done to Golspie in Bloom!
