GREAN have been successful in obtaining part funding from LEADER for an exciting new project to prepare textiles for re use. In recycling jargon textiles include clothing and accessories, shoes, curtains, blankets sheets and towels. We collect textiles at the kerbside from household recyclers and receive them in our bank at Unit 7 in Golspie.
The project will begin in January 2010 and materials that have been previously sent to markets south will be sorted, cleaned and repaired in Unit 2.
Under the close eye of an experienced supervisor, trainees will learn basic skills including laundering repair and presentation of items for sale. Volunteers will be welcomed to pass on their skills in sewing, dressmaking, knitting, spinning etc.
GREAN will be offering this service to other recycling charities in Highland including charity shops (enquiries welcome!).
The first of several textile banks which will collect donations of textiles and books went into position last week in Dornoch at the rear of John Grant and Sons shop. With the help of Jane Bregazzi of Artfuldodges in Dunrobin Glen and teacher Alan Pickering of Dornoch Academy, pupils of S3 Dornoch Academy took part in a competition to design the decoration of the bank with a suitable environmental theme. The bank was decorated and sign written by David Mahoney of the Sign Workshop. GREAN directors chose the winning design and winner Alex Wright of Dornoch has been presented with a book token valued at £25. Thanks go to all including Sandy and Barbara Morrison of John Grant and Sons who have provided the site.
