Community Garden
The Community Garden has been developed on former waste land between the Industrial Estate and the High School in the centre of Golspie. It is about 1000m2 with a central octagonal area sub-divided into ‘mini allotments'; and a polytunnel. Its boundary is marked with a 'wildlife' hedge planted by GREAN staff and volunteers in 2002 with over 20 native species plants. In spring and early summer the polytunnel is used by Golspie in Bloom and the Golspie Biblical Garden to grow bedding plants for hanging baskets and containers which decorate the village every summer. It is also used to raise plants sown by groups of children, mainly for tomato and other salad fruits.
The ‘mini allotments' are used by a wide variety of groups and individuals to produce fresh, organic vegetables, these are allocated annually. Anyone interested in taking a plot should contact or phone 01408 634253.
Seating made from recycled plastic milk bottles has been installed.
From June 2007 to May 2009 the Garden became a venue for pupils from Golspie High School undertaking a course in Rural Skills. This course is not to be repeated in 2009/10, which is a great pity.
The original 'Buggy', a battery powered refurbished airport people carrier used for the development of kerbside recycling collections in Golspie has found its last resting place here in the garden, illustrating how far the original GREAN project has come since 2000.
GREAN Art Garden has been developed as part of the Community Garden to create a space in which contemporary art can be experienced at first hand. Spaces and platforms are available for artists to display their work in a unique environment. The Art Garden project has increased access to contemporary art for the whole community as well as creating a place to meet in the centre of Golspie. The Art Garden is set to become a prominent venue for all sorts of art-related activities, which stimulate interest in, and raise awareness of, artistic issues.
